Previously purchased, & was just going to buy again but…
I’m fairly happy with this paper, I go through quite a bit for many things and I’m always running low so I thought I’d buy some more while I was getting other items.Other than having occasional difficulties with a clean tear across the top of the sheet of paper, my only complaint is returning to purchase this from Amazon as the same seller in less than a month and finding the price has increased by $5.00.I’ll make do with what I have for now, I’m sure I still have some partially used notepads around here somewhere.

Perfect for students and business people
I have used these legal pads for taking notes in class for two years now. They are nice, because you don’t have to deal with any of the annoyances that come with typical notepad paper, e.g., holes in the sheet, rough or uneven edges. However, this is a bad thing for those that like to put their notes into a three-ring binder. The downside is, unless you are ok with having fold creases on your pages (folding it back over the pad), you will need to remove each sheet before moving on to the next one. It takes some practice to rip exactly on the perforation for a clean break, but once you get the feel for it, you’ll get it 100%.Sometimes professors require homework/formula sheets to be exactly 8 1/2″ x 11″. That’s ok for these legal pads, because although it’s listed as 8 1/2″ x 11 1/2″, once you remove the sheet at the perforation line, you will lose that extra 1/2 inch.A major plus for these legal pads are the cardboard backings, because they can work as standalone tables on your lap. This is contrary to most notepads, which are flimsy and require a hard surface–especially when the paper is running low.As for price, it’s competitive with the market. Buy the 12-pack for extra value.I recommend these pads for students or business people. Writers and artists may like to look elsewhere, because of the fold creases mentioned above and the difficulty in keeping your work private (no cover).

Tops are the absolute best notebooks
If you are a paper lover and enjoy a thinner sheet that is smooth and easy to write on….. this is it. I have always loved Tops notebooks and the ones I used for years they stopped selling. These are perfect for my work projects.

Cardboard backing on The Legal Pad Tops not a stiff enough support
This may seem like a trivial thing, but it’s not. You either need to lay this on a desk/table top, or a clipboard to easily write on these pads. The cardboard is not stiff enough to hold this in your hands and take notes. While this may not affect everyone, it does me. I often have to take notes on the go. I used to get the Dockets Tops pads but they aren’t available anymore. Docket Diamond pads are more than $12 for one 50-page pad. Such is the price of adequate cardboard, I guess.

The blue lines are very thick.
The only issue with this product is the blue lines on the paper being about three times as thick as “normal” lined paper; ie in a $0.25 spiral notebook sold at WalMart. If you prefer the lack of a metal spiral and not having the paper cut on the side but cut on the top instead, but also don’t mind that the blue lines will seem to take over your visual field, this paper is much cheaper than similar options on Amazon and using a gel ink pen, like a Pilot Precise (not a sponsor), doesn’t bleed through very much at all.I use it for math notes/assignments/quizzes/tests and there has never been an issue with scanning via a scanner or a phone, if that is relevant to you.

Sheets don’t tear-off neatly. (Might not sound annoying, but…)
Amazon shows that I’ve ordered this item once before the most recent time; since I’ve reordered, my first order (years ago) must have been fine. It’s 2024, I know, but sometimes I take notes by hand; or even re-write scribbles so that what I learned or think can be saved. Nothing is as annoying as writing a clean summary of something, only to have the top tear unevenly. It’s not how it looks; sometimes the sheets can’t be neatly stapled to other sheets because there’s no top left.I’ll never order these again. If you’re wanting pads with nice paper, and you’re not planning to tear sheets out and same them, this is a fine pad.

Medium weight paper
Not to get picky but, the paper is at best a medium weight quality….and will rip instead of tear when pulling from the pad.Yes, this to me makes all of the difference. Your mileage may vary. If you don’t mind thinner paper and a great price, this is the one deal for you.

PROS & CONS and SPECS of TOPS 7533 Legal Pads. NEGATIVE REVIEWS ADDRESSED
I have purchased several 12-packs of these Tops legal pads, No. 7533, so obviously I am happy with them. Some people complain that the back is not sturdy enough for writing on your lap. The chipboard IS thin. Using a professional paper micrometer, we mic’d it at 26 pt. I can write on a full pad without a desk, but as the pad gets low it’s not so good. There is a simple solution if you are willing to invest a few dollars. I consider the price of these pads excellent – ESPECIALLY since they are made in the USA!!! And so, for the money saved on just one 12-pack, over the cost of most other legal pads, you can purchase a clipboard. In the search window, enter “clipboard with low profile clip”. If you do not tear pages off as you complete them, the low profile clip, which is practically flat, will not interfere with flipping the pages over the top.Amazon often has these clipboards for $4 or $5, sometimes Prime, sometimes as a free Add-On item (free shipping with any $25 order). The hardboard ones are your old style brown clipboard that have been around forever. I like colors, so I’ve ordered at least 7 plastic and transparent ones from Amazon in the last year and they work great. I’ve never had one break, I just use them for different things at one time – legal pad clipped to one for jotting notes when I’m on the phone, To Do List clipped to another, weekly menu on another, running grocery list on another, legal pad clipped to another for taking notes in a conference, etc. (And a spare one on hand for when one gets buried on my desk!)Amazon has black clipboards for a more professional look, and an aluminum one which costs more, but looks nice. There are also landscape (horizontal rather than vertical) clipboards, if you don’t like even a flat clip at the top. You would turn the clipboard vertical to write of course, which puts the clip on the left side in the margin of the legal pad. The only downside is you would have to lift the clip each time you needed to flip a page over, which takes only a second, but if you are taking notes really fast in a class or conference this might be a problem. As an off-the subject side note about clipboards: I purchased a Baumgartens Double Panel See-Thru clipboard from Amazon which is kind of neat if you have a paper you need to refer to often while using your clipboard, such as a price list, a measurement conversion chart, a math chart, a percentage chart, a conjugating verbs chart, a phone number list, a list of customers to call on today, or whatever. The chart or paper slips between two pieces of clear acrylic, protecting it from the weather if outdoors, and both sides of it are visible (or two one-sided papers). You can still clip a legal pad on top of it, though only one side would then be visible without lifting the legal pad. Very handy. If the pages don’t stay flipped over the top as well as you would like (with or without a clipboard, and with ANY legal pad), you can buy an Acco Binder Clip or Sparco Bulldog clip to clip the used pages (that you’ve flipped over the top) to the legal pad or clipboard (if using one) so they stay put. There are far more favorable reviews than unfavorable for this product, which leads me to believe the folks complaining of bent, folded pages and missing lines must have received the occasional bad batch or “lemon”. I’ve never had ANY of those problems in even one pad. These pads are stapled high at the top, with a brown paper securely pasted over the top and wrapping around to the back, to hide the staples. The pad is perforated just below that brown paper, and I find the pages tear out very clean and easily if I press the brown paper down with my thumb as I start the tear (and even if I don’t, pages still tear out neatly). The Product Information Technical Details, at the time of this writing, states the Pad Size is 8.5 x 11.75 (correct), and the Sheet Size is the same, 8-1/2 x 11-3/4 (INcorrect). Once torn out at the perf, the sheet of paper is 8 1/2 x 10 7/8, which I would think passes for 8.5 x 11 in any classroom. There is a double red line creating a 1.25″ margin on the left, which looks like the standard width to me. There are 28 blue horizontal lines, creating 27 writing spaces. Margin at the top is 1-1/16″, margin at the bottom is barely over 1/2″ (about 9/16″).The paper IS slightly thin. It mic’d at 3.0 mil. 20# bond is 4.0 mil, so this is 15#. I looked at Wal-Mart since their prices are usually low. They had Ampad legal pads, $28.49 a dozen. Chipboard was 40 pt., which is substantially thicker; paper 15#, same as these. But look at the difference in price. $7.99 vs. $28.49. Office Depot’s best priced pads, their brand, was $11.69 a dozen, 16 pt. paper which isn’t enough to make a difference, 30 pt. chipboard, which is slightly heavier. Cost: almost 50% more. TOPS does make several legal pads with heavier paper and much heavier chipboard, if you’re willing to pay more. 7533 is their economical pad for people who want to pay less and are willing to accept less thickness. If you are submitting this paper to someone you wish to impress (professor, boss, client, prospective customer), you might want to buy more expensive pads. For my uses, these are quite adequate.I would give these pads a 4 star if I paid a lot for them, because of thin cardboard and paper. But I feel they are an excellent value for the $8 – 9 I’ve paid, so I gave them 5 stars. It seems unfair to buy an obviously “economical choice” legal pad, and then give it a bad rating because it isn’t the highest quality legal pad out there. If high quality is what is needed, it’s unfair to expect it in the lowest priced legal pads. That said, it WOULD be nice if Amazon and Tops provided the thickness of the paper and chipboard in the specs of ALL the legal pads so we could make an informed choice.I would, I will, and I HAVE, recommended these legal pads.

Decent pads for everyday stuff. Backing is a bit flimsy.
I wanted some paper for everyday stuff – jotting down notes, leaving a message for my husband that wasn’t on an electronic device, inserting into packages I am returning with my info and instructions, that sort of thing. I generally prefer pads pf paper with a cover but I hate ripping pages out and having all that junk on the sides. These seemed to be fine for my needs. I got the package of 12 Everyday Tops Legal Pads which are NOT legal pads in size. The’re standard 8.5×11.5″ pads. That was fine with me. I didn’t need longer paper but the fact that these are called legal pads baffles me.There are only 50 sheets per pad and the backs of the pads aren’t as stiff I would like. The cardboard backing s flimsy. But these do have perfections so I can pull off a sheet cleanly and they work for my needs. I use regular pens and gel pans and I don’t have any bleeding from one page to another. I don’t think I would use a marker with these pads unless I pulled a sheet off first and wrote on the single sheet so as not to have the marker bleed to the sheets below. In all, not great the greatest quality but fine for my use. I will probably look for pads that have a heavier backing next time unless these are much cheaper than the competition. In all, if you want paper for general note taking, this is paper and it’s reasonably priced for 12 pads.

I usually buy these from Walmart for my husband but the several months its been hit or miss if I can find them. So I figured I’d try these out. cannot remove sheets cleanly
the paper was the least expensive and it’s probably a good value for the money if you don’t care about having a ragged top when sheets are pulled of the pad. I’ll buy the Amazon Basic pads in the future. They ripped cleanly across the top.

It does the trick except…
This is a note pad and it does exactly what it is supposed to do. The only real issue is how flimsy the cardboard backing is. This pad would be terrible in the field without something to put under it. I have found no issues once I placed the pad into my portfolio.

Pads with Thin paper
I tried these pads for the first time. Overall, I would not recommend them unless you want relatively cheap paper for quick notes. The paper is thin and would not be something you would be buy if you want to write notes want to store them for awhile or if you are writing with certain wet fountain pen inks.As far as shipping Amazon did a terrible job and the top pad had a few pages damaged by other items in the shipping box.

Never thought I would be writing a review for legal pads
It’s okay, but as a person who has used legal pads for over 40 years, the paper is a bit thin and when you go to tear out a page from the pad, it never tears cleanly, leaving your paper torn at the top. I would not recommend.

How to save $10 with these quality pads by doubling up on the underweight backings.
Cardboard backing only works if you use it on a flat surface or a clip board. I find it pretty flimsy and therefore difficult to use when trying to hold it in one had whole writing on it with the other. At least when compared to other similar pads.I measured the cardboard thickness on these pads compared to others by same brand. Seems like a rip off to double the price for that small amount of cardboard.Frankly, I would have thought the paper should have been the most expensive part. Apparently the manufacturer believes a thin gray sheet of cardboard is worth more than 5 colored, lined sheets of high quality paper. Also, I am unable to see or feel and difference in the quality of lined paper between this and the twice as expensive variety pads.It might by more prudent to tape 2 or 3 of these cheaper cardboard backings temporarily onto the pad from these cheaper ones you are using until you have consumed the pad. This way you get almost the same experience of the more expensive pads but only pay half as much.

Not the best quality, but serves its purpose
I definitely see some flaws with some of the pages, here and there, but it’s nothing so bad that I have a major problem with it. I don’t use this for super-serious purposes. This is merely used for jotting down things, so I remember to pay attention to them. I’m not sure yet if I’ll purchase this again, but for the price, it’s convenient and useful for general purposes. If you’re using legal pads for a more serious nature, I would not advise these, but would suggest investing in a stronger, more quality type of legal pad.

I NEVER write reviews but I had to for this to tell everyone how bad they are.
TOPS has a lot of nerve branding themselves “THE legal pad”. As the title says, I have never written a product review before because it’s too much effort, but my hatred for these writing pads shadows my laziness by a factor of 100000. Basically every other paper company in the world has figured out a way to make writing paper smooth and flat, but it seems the paper engineers at TOPS must have missed that week at paper school, since these the paper in these pads puff up and wrinkle until the pad is twice as thick as it’s supposed to be, with half of the thickness being air. Imagine trying to write, but everytime you lift your pen, the paper underneath just puffs up and lifts with the pen, so that when you start a new line you need to re-smooth the writing pad in order to prevent your pen from dragging on the page accidentally. Imagine trying to put the writing pad into your backpack after a long lecture, and the pages all catch the edges of the inside of your bag and you put it in, wrinkling the sides and folding the bottom corners of your hard-earned notes. Imagine spending years perfecting your print just to have everything turn into lazy-man’s cursive because the paper is spring loaded under your pen tip. These are the struggles you will face if you buy this product. These pads are seriously, ……. SERIOUSLY…… bad. To the employees at TOPS: you have one job, and you do it terribly.

NOT recommended
I use similar pads for my work and go through a 6 pack every few months. I am throwing these TOPS pads away for two reasons. The ink rule is way to dark to the point where it obscures my writing. Second, the rule is not narrow, which I was seeking. Besides, who invented “legal rule”? – A legal sized pad is longer. I’m going to pay the extra amount for the Mintra pads. They are much better quality. I haven’t tried the Amazon basics pads, but after my Tops experience (these pads), it’s not work the risk for a few extra dollars. Last time I bought an Amazon paper pad, it turned out to be recycled, limp paper. I’m sticking with Mintra.

VERY THIN PAPER-leaves indentations on several following pages
If I had not started using one of the notepads I would return these. The paper is so thin that when I write on the top page, the indentations from that page clearly show on the next 3 pages [see photos] and on the back of each page. The paper on the notebook I had previously which just ran out is thick enough to not leave indentations on the next page or the back of the page. You can actually feel the difference in thickness. If you don’t care about the indentations, then this is a good cheap option. If you do, then I would not recommend this product.

Works
This stuff is great. You just press a pen or pencil to it, then move the pen or pencil while touching. You get a visible line where the pen or pencil was touching. You can orient the lines to produce small symbols, and using a number of small symbols in a line (conveniently there are lines on this product for lining up your small symbols), these symbols together can represent a usually spoken sound which represents a thing or an idea. Then you can leave a gap to the right of your small line of symbols and then you can make another group of these small symbols to represent another thing or idea. You can keep representing as many things or ideas together. You go from left to right on the lines. When you reach the right hand edge of this product, you start again on the lefthand edge. You can continue on and on as though you have things and ideas one after another, as many as you want. When you get to the bottom right corner and completely run out of space, you lift the leaf up and start another “page” at the upper left hand corner. You can go on and on putting more and more things and ideas together until they all come together to form a really really big , complex thing or idea. This is such a great product.

Definitely WORSE than Amazon Basics
I bought these because the price was right AND I assumed, as a well-known name brand, they would surely be better than the Amazon Basics pads. They absolutely ARE NOT better than the Amazon Basics version. The quality of the pads is no better. However, most importantly, THE PAGES DO NOT TEAR CLEANLY FROM THE PAD. I don’t ask a lot of a pad. But as trivial as it sounds, that’s the least they need to do. Otherwise, you’re forever dealing with torn pages, plus having to be super slow and careful and conscious of how you’re tearing the page. NOT what I need to be thinking about. It’s a frustrating, time-consuming pain. I would highly recommend going with Amazon or a different manufacturer.

Boss Buys These For Quality For 6 Years Now ~ Didn’t Make the Grade This Time!
The lines on the paper were faded out, so there was a huge white spot on many pages of this item. My boss is very particular about the paper he uses and has used this brand for 10+ years (I’ve worked for him 6), and he mentioned the quality declining and showed me. See the pic, he is very disappointed!!He also mentioned when ripping the page off, it doesn’t rip off and usually tears the paper. He isn’t picky about much, but his paper is a big deal to him and he’s extremely disappointed. What can you do about this, please?
